How To Order A Repeat Prescription

Unless a review of your medication is due, or you feel it necessary, patients on regular treatment need only return the tear-off strip attached to their prescription, indicating what items they require. Prescriptions can be requested in person at the surgery or by post.

  • Repeat prescriptions can also be requested online using the NHS App
  • We can only accept telephone requests from house-bound patients.
  • We need at least three working days’ notice to provide a repeat prescription.

If possible, order your repeat prescription about a week before your medication is due to run out.

How to Get A Repeat Prescription

Online Using Patient Access

You can request repeat prescriptions online through the NHS App. Without contacting the practice, you can use the service to order your repeat prescriptions that are due. Once requested, simply collect your prescriptions from the surgery or if an arrangement is in place we will send this to a chemist of your choice.

If you are interested in this service please ask at reception for a registration form. You will need to provide identification and will be asked to sign a contract. The service is password protected and you will be advised of your PIN number.

Telephone Or Prescription Box

Patients who require long-term medication may have their treatments authorised by their doctor for repeat issue. You may then request this medication without seeing your doctor on every occasion. Your doctor will check and sign every prescription and review your treatment with you periodically to ensure it remains appropriate. You will have a written record of your medication, which you should show to anyone else who treats you.

Please remember that you can only have repeat prescriptions where these have been authorised by your doctor, and then only for the long-term treatments they have prescribed for repeat issue.

You may leave your repeat prescription request in the box provided at reception. If you are housebound you may ring us to request your repeat prescription at least 48 hours before you run out of medication.

Will I Definitely Get My Prescription?

For your safety, the doctor may need to see or speak to you before deciding whether to issue a prescription. The medicine management staff don’t know in advance whether the doctor will authorise your request. They can only process it.

If any of your items cannot be issued, we will attempt to phone you to inform you of this. If we are unable to contact you, unfortunately, we can only let you know when you come to collect the prescription. Please ensure you let us know of any change of address or phone number (including mobiles) by completing the Change Personal Details form.

Please note: for confidentiality reasons, we ask staff not to leave messages on answer machines – please check back with them after 2 days if you have any concerns.

Medication Reviews

The doctor or nurse will need to review your medication every so often to make sure the medications are working as they should and are still the most suitable for you. Sometimes they will need to see you or speak to you to discuss this with you. We may contact you to let you know that you need an appointment before your prescription can be issued.

Please speak to the medicine management team at least a week before your medication review is due and they will find out if you require an appointment.

Home Deliveries

If you would like to have your medications delivered, you must arrange this with your preferred pharmacy. All local pharmacies can provide this service. We are not responsible for deliveries and cannot ensure that the pharmacy delivers on time.

Medicine Initiated By A Hospital

If you have a medicine request initiated by a hospital please leave the hospital letter with us with a contact number. If we do not ring you the prescription will be ready within 3 working days.

If you are seen by a private specialist and given a private prescription we are happy to consider transferring this to an NHS prescription. In certain circumstances it may be appropriate to prescribe your medication as an NHS prescription. Please note that in these cases the prescribing policy that is applied to all of our NHS prescribing will be followed.
